Axial flux motor SA series - pancake motor
Flat design with plenty of power and smooth running
Axial flux motor is ideal for low-profile applications: moving cameras, gimbals, scanners, and imaging systems. Axial flux motors are slotless and therefore have no cogging torque.
An axial flux motor is a type of permanent magnet synchronous motor in which the magnetic flux runs parallel to the axis of rotation, resulting in a very flat design. Although recent trends in vehicle electrification have led to an increase in interest in axial flux motors, but this concept is not new.
Axial flux motors are relatively simple to manufacture and are usually the most cost-effective solution for direct drive. Thanks to their modular design, these motors can be easily scaled to large diameters. The diameter of a motor can range from 30 millimeters to over 1 meter.

How do axial flux motors work
A rotating magnetic field is created when three-phase current is applied to the stator windings by a controller. As a result, this interacts with the permanent magnetic field of rotor magnets. The resulting Lorentz force causes the rotor to turn. For highest system efficiency, the combination of the motor with a servo drive that uses sinusoidal current control (e.g. space vector pulse width modulation) and precise position feedback is essential.
However, operation with a trapezoidal or sensorless drive is also possible. Axial flux motors can also have special sensors that give feedback about changing position because of changes in the magnetic fields. Additionally, this can be used for commutation or redundancy.
